Writing Workshop
What is Writing Workshop?
This is the time of day where students explore themselves as a writer, communicate their ideas, share their stories and share their learning/understanding of other curricular areas. TCAPS has adopted Lucy Calkin’s Writing Workshop as their curriculum. Here are the units of study we will be exploring throughout the year. http://readingandwritingproject.com What does Writing Workshop look like? Minilesson: The teacher instructs the whole class on a skill, strategy, or habit that students need to learn and use during independent writing. The minilesson connects to a previous lesson, ongoing unit of study, or student work/experience. The teacher may read a book, magazine, poem, or other print material to the class to reinforce their purpose. They may also model writing strategies during this time. Independent Writing/Conferring: Students write independently at their seats, they can continue working on a piece of writing of start a new piece for the day. The teacher has a few brief, instructional conferences with individual students or small groups. Partner Writing: Two students read their writing to one another and provide feedback to each other and ask questions that may help them improve their writing. Share: The whole class meets to share a strategy they used in their writing. |
