Reading WorkshopWhat is Reading Workshop?
This is the time of day where your child has the opportunity to explore new strategies in reading through independent practice, small group, partner reading, guided reading and teacher conferencing. TCAPS has adopted Lucy Calkin's Reading Workshop as our curriculum. http://readingandwritingproject.com What does Reading Workshop look like? Minilesson: The teacher instructs the whole class on a skill, strategy, or habit that students need to learn and use during independent reading. The minilesson connects to a previous lesson, ongoing unit of study, or student work/experience. The teacher may read a book, magazine, poem, or other print material to the class to reinforce their purpose. They may also model reading strategies during this time. Independent Reading/Conferring: Students read “just-right books”, (books they can read independently) they have chosen from our classroom library or guided reading books that the teacher has selected to support the child in their next level of learning. The teacher has a few brief, instructional conferences with individual students or small groups. Partner Reading: Two students read together and discuss their reading. Share: The whole class meets to share a strategy they used in their reading. We end Reading Workshop with a choice activity from "The Daily 5." Students choose from: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Word Work, Listen to Reading, or Work on Writing. Providing choice for students is an instant motivator and often supports success in the student's overall attitude toward literacy. |
